E-mobility and sustainability at IONITY

Sustainability

IONITY is driving the future of sustainable mobility by providing a reliable charging network for electric vehicles across Europe, powered exclusively by renewable energy. With over 690 charging stations in 24 countries, IONITY ensures long-distance EV travel while actively contributing to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting a greener future.

At a time when the call for sustainable mobility solutions is becoming ever louder, eMobility is increasingly taking centre stage. Electric cars offer a promising alternative to vehicles with combustion engines and make a significant contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in road traffic. However, it is not only the vehicles themselves that are decisive for the environmental balance, but also the way in which they are charged. This is where IONITY comes into play, playing a central role in the expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in Europe.

IONITY's mission: Expanding the charging network for electric vehicles

IONITY was founded in 2017 and has set itself the task of massively expanding the charging network for electric vehicles along Europe's main transport arteries. The aim is to create a comprehensive and reliable charging infrastructure for electric vehicles to promote electromobility in Europe. Thanks to strategically placed charging stations along motorways, drivers of electric cars can cover long distances without having to worry about their range. IONITY currently operates over 690 charging stations in 24 European countries (as of November 2024) and plans to further expand this network. Thanks to us, drivers of electric cars can travel in all directions across Europe.

Sustainable charging with renewable energy sources

An important aspect of eMobility is the question of the origin of the charged electricity. Only charged with electricity from renewable energy sources, EVs will fully utilise their potential to reduce CO2 emissions. That's where IONITY comes in: The company receives its electricity from renewable energy sources and offers a sustainable charging solution for drivers of electric cars.

IONITY's charging stations are powered by green electricity generated from wind energy, solar energy or hydropower. Drivers of electric cars can be sure their vehicles are being charged in an environmentally friendly way and that they are actively contributing to climate protection. The more charging processes take place, the greater the demand for certified green electricity from renewable sources.

Positive CO2 balance of electric vehicles

The CO2 footprint of electric vehicles depends on various factors. In addition to emissions during the production of the vehicle, emissions during operation play a decisive role. Here, electric cars perform significantly better than vehicles with combustion engines: they don't emit any harmful exhaust gases during operation and therefore contribute only minimally to air pollution.

But there are also differences in the production of electric cars: While battery production is resource-intensive and involves a certain amount of CO2 emissions, this is quickly offset by the environmentally friendly use of the vehicle during its life cycle. Especially when electric cars are charged with green electricity, the CO2 balance is positive.

IONITY's contribution to a green future

IONITY is thus making an important contribution to reducing CO2 emissions in road traffic. By providing a nationwide and reliable charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, we're enabling drivers of electric cars to cover distances without any worries. Through the use of renewable energy sources, IONITY ensures that electric vehicles can be charged in a sustainable way, further promoting the transition to a green future of mobility.
