Caring for the ocean starts by taking the right steps on land

Today’s World Ocean Day is a reminder for all of us that we need to protect our climate and, with that, the health of our oceans. How is IONITY connected to the seven seas? Read on.

To stop global warming, we need to drastically reduce CO2 emissions – which is at the heart of what IONITY does. Our goal is to enable electric travel for everyone in Europe. And with that, help to decarbonize the transport and mobility sector that is responsible for a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. Decarbonization needs electrification. And electrification needs infrastructure. That’s why we build a pan-European high-power charging network which is open to electric vehicles of all brands – providing only and exclusively electricity that is generated from renewable sources of energy.
Reducing CO2 emissions is crucial to the health of our oceans, too. The Ocean has the capacity to absorb CO2 from the environment. When excess CO2 dissolves in seawater, it causes an acidity increase. This is known as Ocean Acidification. This phenomenon, coupled with other factors, is destroying marine ecosystems.

To raise awareness for this fact, Divers Alert Network (DAN) Europe Ambassadors decided to travel across Europe and speak with stakeholders from various institutions, policy makers and companies that play a leading role in the sustainable movement – including a stop-over at IONITY headquarters in Munich. The team started on last year’s World Ocean Day and travelled 25.000 kilometres through 17 European countries, using an electric vehicle, the Hyundai Kona. Where did they charge? At IONITY charging stations, with 100% renewable energy that makes driving not just emissions-free but truly carbon-neutral. And demonstration in an impressive manner that long-distance driving in an electric vehicle is a reality today already.

What’s next

So, this year’s World Ocean Day is the right time to announce that the story continues. The Sustainable Tour 2022 will kick off on July 15 and will lead the team through the UK and Ireland – a perfect place for the tour, considering that no one lives more than 120 km away from a coast. IONITY is happy to support the team and their purpose once again. Stay tuned for more.
